This calculator identifies how far from the end of the intersection a yellow light line should be painted that would give drivers a visual reference of when they should stop vs. when they will safely clear the intersection while traveling at the speed limit.

Methodology:

distance = ([speed limit (mph)] × [5,280 ft]) × ([yellow light length (seconds)] ÷ [3,600 seconds per hour])
