I absolutely loved this show. I discovered it somewhat late (during COVID) but I binged until I reach the point that I was waiting every week for a new episode to come out. This show really inspired me to follow my passion for storytelling because I was able to listen as people had fun creating stories even if they weren't massively popular. I hope that everyone who has participated in the creation of this show knows how much they are appreciated by the small group of people who actually listen. Hopefully Dispatches from the Multiverse still will have it's chance to become 'viral' in the future.

Much love and many thanks, cAcLnE.

We have that HORRIBLE 34 button Jenn-Air microwave shown above and it is a daily nightmare. Besides all the real problems you correctly mentioned, those badly designed and confusing flat buttons do NOT light-up and the text is far too tiny and hard to read. I have to turn on all the lights in the kitchen each time I use this terrible thing. Plus, ours is about 4 years old and overpriced and the door-hinge has broken several times requiring expensive service calls.

Honestly, I don't care how complicated the interface is as long as the cooking results are there. I just bought a panasonic to replace an old broken panasonic and even though the (crappy) interface was the same, the new model could not do popcorn without burning it AND leaving a ton of unpopped corn. Had to return it.

The old panasonic was great at defrosting food on low wattage settings (non-inverter microwaves don't use lower wattage they pulse... again, don't care as long as the results are good). I didn't even get to that point.

I do happen to prefer the new interface... really, a 30s/start cooking button is all you need for most tasks. It's an RCA RMW1324

The only necessary inputs are wattage and time (plus start and stop controls).
However, it's convenient to have various wattage-and-time combinations assigned to labeled buttons (or menu items). It would be nice if one could dial in the wattage, dial in the time, then save that setting to a button and assign it a label (as we do when we set up an audio-video receiver.) Thus it would be possible to make "Beverage" mean the same thing (in terms of W+T) for any 2 microwaves.

The funny part is that is mostly concerns the US. In Europe, brands like Whirlpool (US company !) design very nice ovens with the basic 30-sec start button and simple power adjustment (+other fancy things).

I tried to find a whirlpool microwave when I moved to the US, but those were just as terrible as others. Finally bought the Panasonic with the button, but that one is disappointing too : you cannot increase /decrease the time once it started, nor change the power and the start button does not start/add 30 seconds.

Half-baked design, again.

We have similar issues at Crescent Ave and Thomson. There is no stop or yield sign at that intersection so we get a decent amount of people who don't pay attention to other vehicles coming down Crescent. According to the police, Crescent has the right of way and Thomson has to yield. Yeah right. Add in the frequent speeding on both streets, the lack of sidewalks, upcoming summer with kids playing outside; there have been near misses already.

I've talked with the City multiple times. The answer was to put some yellow "turtles" right before the intersection at Thomson. So far many people seem to ignore them. Oh, and according to the city there is no reason for a yield or stop sign there. I'm also getting tired of people blowing through the stop sign at 40th and Crescent. There have been many near misses there, and coming within a foot of being t-boned is not my idea of fun (well, almost being t-boned 5 times this year so far means that I'm extremely wary of driving or walking to Safeway.)

But hey, no one has died lately so that means it's all great! *sighs*

Hey Tim, I gave a talk at the Cape Town geek dinner on this very topic several years ago.

I originally thought that this was an "engineering overriding design" problem. That engineers were to blame because they're coming up with features that customers don't need and cram them in using buttons.

But a conversation with a friend working at BAT convinced me that the issue was more complex than that... He said that when the first microwaves with LCD displays and lots buttons came out, they were more expensive and sophisticated. Having a big, complex microwave oven in your kitchen meant that _you_ were also more 'sophisticated'. Microwaves with buttons and displays sold better, at bigger margins, than microwaves with knobs.

I thought that marketers were to blame in this case for the terrible UX of microwave ovens, but I'm wondering how much bad design exists from people intentionally purchasing poorly designed products precisely because they're poorly designed.

Did you consider the drips?

Having spent an hour in a traffic jam on the freeway this morning behind a Sherwin-Williams truck I was trying to figure out if this is possible?

Would a giant paint can suspended above the Earth's equator actually pour out paint and cover the Earth?

I decided that yes it can.

Assuming that the can was truly suspended by some force and not actually in a equatorial orbit. Meaning that somehow the tremendous weight of the can was supported against the Earth’s gravity, such that if the lid is removed the paint actually would pour out and cover the Earth. I think the splash might even be realistic. The drips, however, are defying gravity.

I was Markline's fraud prevention manager for 12 years from 1977 to 1988. I became part of their accounting Department. I was almost out of Bentley, when they hired me.

They not only sold electronics, but we created an internal software system with the programmers to become one of the more sophisticated systems in mail order. Among its features was a fraud prevention system that I created and implemented which allowed a daily exception report to allow us to prevent shipping over 99.9 % of fraudulent attempts.

We put this system on the market with a few sales people and sold it to quite a few places, like The Company Store, and eventually The Sharper Image. From what I heard from legitimate cardholders in conversations, LL Bean and Sharper Image were getting clobbered with fraud, and Sharper Image bought our system, then stole 2 people away from us.

We Also did fulfillment programs for Hormel, The Bear Necessities, The Smithsonian Institute, and about a few dozen other large businesses. TRW also came down to look at what we had. The Secret Service came once a year to borrow a copy of my "fraud list" in which I accumulated several thousand nationwide addresses from Coast to Coast, and they made quite a few arrests.

Those were truly the good old days.

At first glance the real risk of a fatality for most climbers seems skewed by the generalization of "climbing Rainier". Do your conclusions hold up if you consider route and season as factors? Liberty Rudge is exceptionally dangerous and seldom climbed whereas Dissappointment Cleaver is often climbed as the most common trade route and is likely relatively safer. It may be useful to understand the real risk by also examining the fatalities by season: are there more fatalities during winter compared to peak summer climbing season? Can you make a predictive model based on historical data to estimate risk for conditions with the lowest probability of a fatality?

What a wonderful idea! It's functional, beautiful, and incredibly imaginative, and while I'm also sad about that wonderful old tree being sacrificed, if it had to come down, I can't imagine it wouldn't approve in spirit of the lovely, useful work of art it has become! In fact, it instantly brought the children's story book "The Giving Tree" to my mind, immediately followed by a smile! Great job on both the concept and the terrific sculpture! <3

I agree that the UI of most microwaves is indeed terrible, but your requirements are very limited. More complex use cases require more complex controls. For example, I often cook things that require the ability to control power output over time-- say, 50% power for 5 minutes then 100% power for 3 minutes. In addition, I appreciate the convenience of being able to cook a baked potato or bag of popcorn with one button press.

Clearly there's a market for the old-school, one-knob units, and equally clearly there's a lot of room for improvement in UI design for models with more features. Keep up the fight! As Alan notes, our smartphones have spoiled us all for other devices.

It's certainly true that most microwaves have terrible user interfaces, but I don't think this is unique to microwaves. Almost all consumer electronics today have terrible user interfaces.

Look at your TV's remote control, your car's in-dash "entertainment system", or your house's thermostat (unless you have a Nest). They're all covered in 4000 buttons, often non-tactile, and arranged in no particular order. Lousy user interfaces are the norm.

We're spoiled because smartphones generally have pretty good user interfaces, especially considering all the complexity they manage. But of all the electronics in our lives, it's pretty much just cell phones that made the leap to good user interfaces.

Interestingly, if you want a microwave oven with a good user interface, the cheapest models tend to be the best. I bought a no-name $20 microwave once that has 2 knobs (time, power) and it's the best I've ever used.

I agree that the UI on microwaves shouldn't be that complicated. A knob is all that is needed. Regarding your 'inverter' , that is a feature that is unique to Panasonic, they have created a microwave emitter that can emit microwaves at different strengths. Other microwaves, when you put it on 'defrost' or whatever, what that means is it turns on the emitter at 100% still, but it cuts the power to the emitter for 70% of the time. The inverter tech in the Panasonic allows the emitter to remain active but at a low power level, so you can get softer butter or a better defrost. It is a better technology, and it's not useless.

Be aware the most kids in foster care are "on the path" to a permanent placement by adoption, but not actually yet free to adopt. Children in this stage of the process (the vast majority of those hoping to be adopted, from my perspective) do require you to have a foster license to take a placement. But if your state licensor is making you aware of the number of children free to adopt, and letting you get a feel for what profiles for kids in that stage of the process look like, then that's good.

Have others noticed ct's (st's sno co operator) inability to keep buses running 10 minutes apart, especially northbound in afternoon? Its not that they all run late, but one will, then will pick up almost two buses worth). The next one ends up almost right behind it. Can't be traffic or they'd all be late. But ct refuses to pay attention and do anything about it.

In Washington it is not illegal to deliberately drive through a yellow light. A yellow light means only that traffic facing the light is “warned” that a red light will soon follow. As long as your vehicle entered the intersection or passed the crosswalk or limit line before the light turned red, you haven’t broken the law. Driving Laws

What happens when traffic is moving slower than the speed limit? Seems like in poor weather condition or areas/times when traffic moves more slowly that the yellow lines could risk indicating to a driver that they have more time than they actually do.
